Sun, sand, endless seas running between the small islands are what makes the Maldives different from the rest of the world. Ships, safari boats, seaplanes, speed boats are the most common types of transportation used to travel from one place to the other in the Maldives. The launch of new “Vermillion 320” ferry services in the central province is the most recent addition to the mode of transport in the country and it is less expensive way to travel from one island to the other island around this part of the Maldives.
Vermillion International, the official and exclusive transport operator in the central province assigned by the Maldivian Government has built a ‘third generation ferry’ with 60 passenger seats. Unlike the wooden platforms they normally have on ferries, this 55ft long ferry have comfortable seating and also an inbuilt, approximately 6ft wide and 10 ft long area for patients. It also has separate wash rooms for ladies and gents. The ferries run 15 miles per hour much faster than the regular ferries.
With the launch of these ferries, traveling around in the islands in the region made more reachable, convenient and affordable with the ticket costing just for MRF20 per person any distance. This is just like the taxi services, convenient and affordable. It is rumored that the company had invested MRF320 million on the project and hence this series is named as ‘Vermillion 320’.
Currently this type of ferry services are available in Meemu Atoll of Central Province and a similar but more traditional type of ferries are also available in Laamu Atoll in the South Central Province.
