The Maldives currency is called Rufiyaa [Rf], which is divided into 100 Larees. Maldives Rufiyaa comes in different denominations of notes and coins. The notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 while the coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Larees.
However, US Dollars, Euros and Sterling pounds are more commonly exchanged in the resorts, hotels, safari boats, guest houses, souvenir shops in the Maldives.
An exchange maybe necessary only if you are planning to buy something from the local grocery shops or pay direct to a local fisherman.
ATM machines and money changer are conveniently located at the airport in the arrival terminal, in the capital city Male’ and also found in bigger islands of the Maldives. Usually the exchange rate is RF12.75 against US$1, this rate remains unchanged for many years.
Major credit cards such as Visa, Master, American Express are accepted through out the Maldives.
